How much should I budget per day for travel?

There is no single correct figure, because it depends on the destination, the season and your travel style. Start with the nightly price of the accommodation you can actually book, then add estimates for food, local transport and activities based on recent traveller reports, restaurant menus and the city’s official transport fares. Add a 10–15% buffer on top.

Should flights be included in my daily travel budget?

No. Flights, visas and insurance are fixed costs paid once, so keep them separate from daily spending. If you want a single “cost per day” figure for comparison, divide the total trip cost by the number of days afterwards.

How far in advance should I start planning a trip budget?

As soon as you have rough dates and a destination, ideally before you book anything. An early estimate shows whether the trip is realistic and gives you time to adjust the length, dates or style, and to watch flight and accommodation prices.

What should I do if I’m already over budget during a trip?

Look at the daily categories you control, usually meals, taxis and paid activities, and rebalance the remaining days. Use the buffer first. If the overspend is large, drop the lowest-value activity on your list rather than cutting basics like food or safe accommodation.

How do I budget for a trip that covers more than one country?

Create a separate daily budget for each country, since costs can differ a lot between them. Add inter-country transport as a fixed cost, and convert all amounts into one currency so you can compare them. Check each country’s entry requirements with its official government source, as fees and rules can vary.
